About Our Church
First Baptist Church of Tioga, Texas  is a Southern Baptist Convention congregation that has served the
people of the community and area for over 100 years.  In addition, the church has a rich history of
supporting all kinds of mission causes, sharing the good news of hope in the Lord Jesus Christ with
people all over the United States and around the world.
Our Church's Priority
Don't be fooled by the phrase used throughout this page of the web site: "our church."  The term simply
is a point of reference to identify the family of Christians that worships and serves the Lord at First
Baptist Church in Tioga.  Know this, though--the church belongs to the Lord Jesus Christ!  Jesus
Himself said to Peter, and He says to us, "I will build MY church" (Matthew 16:18), and Ephesians
1:22 makes clear the fact that "God placed all things under His (Christ's) feet and appointed Him
(Christ) to be head over everything for the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him Who fills
everything in every way."  Jesus is the Head of the church as a whole and the Head of every local
congregation.  We belong to Him, worship Him, serve Him and share Him with others.  FBC Tioga is
under the Lordship of Jesus Christ, and we trust Him to do His work in and through us.
Our Church's History
The town of Tioga, the town's name being taken from a tribe of New York Indians, was founded in
1881.  Before long, in about 1884, some blacksmiths in town discovered that when they burned their
hands, the water from a nearby well seemed to promote healing.  This discovery of mineral water
caused the town to start growing, and by 1902 the population had increased to 1,200 people.  The town
was incorporated in 1906, and by that time it had a flour mill, a school building, several elegant
residences, one hotel, no saloons, and 4 churches.
However, before the town was founded, a group of Christians gathered in the summer of 1873, called a
pastor in July of that summer, and gave opportunity for folks to become members, beginning on August
4.  By the end of that year, 48 people were members of "The Baptist Church of Christ at Tioga."
The church has experienced many changes over the past 132 years, and changes will continue as
ministry needs and the context of the community experiences transition.  However, God continues to
gather his people at what now is known as "First Baptist Church, for worship, education, fellowship,
and missions work for the cause of Christ.
Our Church's Mission
First Baptist Church of Tioga wants to mirror our Lord's "Great Commission" as stated in Matthew
28:19-20:  "Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father
and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.
And, surely I will be with you always, to the very end of the age."  These verses outline several things
that we desire to accomplish at FBC, Tioga.  First, our mission--generally speaking--is to make disciples
of Jesus Christ.  We exist to point others to Jesus for forgiveness, hope, and purpose.  Along with that,
we desire to lead believers to grow and mature in their daily walk with Him.
Second, the verses indicate that we are to reach all nations--people all over the world.  That means that
we work to share Christ with people from Tioga to the ends of the earth.
Third, we are to baptize, teach, instruct and encourage obedience to God's will and God's design for daily
living.  We do this through the activities of our local congregation in worship, Bible study, fellowship
and other ministry activities.
